Parks & Recreation

What We Do

West Sacramento Parks & Recreation consists of four separate functions: a Parks Division, Recreation Division, Early Learning Services, and our Tree Program. The Parks Department provides recreation and leisure opportunities with its park facilities and recreation programming. Voices of the Golden Ghosts

African Americans in the California Gold Rush

Voices of the Golden Ghosts, the performance collective from Shasta and Siskiyou Counties, will perform the untold history of African Americans in the California Gold Rush.

Within a few years of the first discovery of gold, miners had arrived from all corners of the globe. By 1852, over 2,000 people of African American descent were in the California gold fields. Today, little is ever mentioned about the free and enslaved black men and women who lived by pick and shovel.

Through the lens of contemporary storytelling, theater, and lecture, we reconstruct the lives of these African Americans.
